Facilities | Ingenuity Labs Research Institute

We have nearly 12,000 square feet of space in Mitchell Hall featuring a multi-functional and adaptable experimental area, fabrication and assembly workshops, and research equipment that is available to Ingenuity Labs faculty members and their students.

Our spaces include collaborative working areas for up to 36 students in addition to bookable offices and two conference rooms. Our collision space is designed to encourage conversations between the various groups to spur cross-functional thinking and knowledge transfer.

Maritime Robotics Otter

The Otter is our uncrewed surface vessel from Maritime Robotics in Norway. Our researchers are using the vessel to model marine environments in order to create new autonomous vessel control methods. We are also looking to collaborate with environmental studies researchers to develop autonomous robotic surveillance methods for environmental factors such as coastal erosion, species counts, and water quality measurement.

Boston Dynamics Spot

This quadruped robot is a shared resource for our researchers to work on collaborative research projects. Current and target research projects include investigating visual processing algorithms for autonomous path planning, natural language processing algorithms for verbal human-robot interaction, integration with drones for coordinated land and air search and rescue applications.

Clearpath Husky UGVs

Our labs make use of three Husky robots from Clearpath Robotics. With large payload capacity and power systems, these robot vehicles are ideal for outdoor autonomous mobile robotics research on challenging terrain.

Unitree Go 1

Intelligent, bionic quadruped robot of consumer level, lightweight, take it everywhere, made for robot fans, education and scientific research.

Ibex Robot

The Ibex is a custom built robot initially designed for a research project associated with construction applications. The tracks can adjust up and down when travelling over uneven terrain to keep the bed of the robot level.

Universal Robotics UR5e

Featuring a lightweight design and collision detection safety features, this robot arm is being deployed in situations with close proximity to human users. The range of application include object handling and manipulation as well as interactive or human collaborative applications.

Franka Emika Panda

The Franka Emika Panda is being used for work in human-robot-interaction, particularly in situations involving handing off of an object between a human and a robot. This manipulator is part of the MItHRIL Research Group under the direction of Dr. Matthew Pan.

Kuka iiwa

Our Kuka iiwa was donated to us by Disney Research and Walt Disney Imagineering and will be used in a variety of research involving human-robot-interaction in combination with augmented and virtual reality.

DJI Matrix 600 UAV

Our fleet includes three DJI Matrix 600 drones. They are being deployed on projects related to autonomous infrastructure inspection and are also used to develop navigation algorithms using visual markers and cameras rather than GPS guided systems. Each of our drones are fitted with camera gimbal systems.

Motion Capture System

Our 12-camera Vicon Vero motion capture system enables our researchers to compare where our robots think they are in 3D space to where they actually are. It can be used with our mobile robots, manipulators, and can track 100 mini-drones simultaneously. The system is also used for human subject tracking for biomechanics research in exoskeletons and human-machine interaction.

Xsens Motion Capture Suit

Xsens MTw Awinda Motion Capture Suit is an easy to integrate wireless human motion tracker for real-time applications. The patented Awinda protocol ensures highly accurate time-synchronized data sampling (within 10 μs) in all connected MTw's, which is essential for accurate joint angles.

Trotec Laser Cutter

Trotec Speedy Laser Cutter has first-class components, reliable mechanical engineering guarantee you minimum maintenance and maximum runtime. By using laser cutters, complex shapes and designs can be created, which enhances the researchers creativity and technical skills. Exposing laser cutters to digital workflows, such as programming and controlling production processes, enables new ways of learning. Laser cutters are efficient and easy to use, and they can cut the smallest details with precision.

3D Printers

Our fabrication workshop includes a Markforged Mark 2 3D printer capable of high resolution prints that are almost as strong as machined aluminium parts. We also have a Formlabs Form 2 resin printer as well as a Prusa MK3 FDM printer. These printers are available for use by students working on Ingenuity Labs projects.

GPU Cluster

Our GPU Cluster is housed at the Centre for Advanced Computing, Queen's high performance computing facility. It currently provides the computing resources to primarily support our AI research group as well as some of our biomechanics and robotics research.

Our collision space is designed to encourage interaction and conversations between the various groups to spur cross-functional thinking and knowledge transfer. It is also our configurable event space where we hold seminars, symposia, and social events for 150+ attendees.

Our main floor foot print includes a configurable research area where students can work on autonmous vehicle, human-robot-interaction research, uncrewed aerial vehicle, and biomechanics research. All our research equipment is mobile and the space can be configured for different collaborative experiments.

We have two bookable touchdown offices for our faculty members to use at their convenience. These offices are also used for guests visiting us to be part of our group for a period of time.
