Next-Generation Infrastructure Inspection: Robots, Sensors, and AI in Action
The built environment is the backbone of our society and includes a broad range of infrastructure types that we rely on each and every day. For example, the roads and bridges that we drive on, the pipes that carry water to the tap, and even the building that you are reading this in right now! While we often take the day-to-day reliability of these structures for granted, they should be inspected on a regular basis and after extreme load events to ensure that they remain operational and safe. Traditional approaches to inspecting/ monitoring structures relies on human judgement, which can pose safety concerns and leads to questions about the reliability of the results. This talk will present the challenges surrounding inspection of civil engineering infrastructure and highlight two recent case studies on how autonomous vehicles and sensor systems could improve the quality of inspection data while reducing inspection time and costs.
